The Women’s Business Development Center Child Care Micro Loan Fund provided a $25,000 loan to the first licensed day care center in Phoenix, Illinois, “Sun Shine Child Care Center, Inc.” Sun Shine Child Care Center, Inc. is a start-up day care center founded by Aletha Johnson. The Center opened its doors on December 17, 2001 and is licensed for 34 children age’s two to five years old.

After purchasing the building with her own cash, through the assistance of Teresa Prim, Business Finance Specialist at the WBDC, Ms. Johnson was able to secure additional capital to purchase equipment and complete construction build-out from the WBDC Child Care Micro Loan Fund. Ms. Johnson learned about the WBDC Child Care Micro Loan Program after attending a micro-loan orientation session in August 2001. Subsequently, she applied for a loan and was funded in October of 2001.

Aletha Johnson is a single-mother of seven and former Teacher. She holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from St. Xavier University in Mass Communication and an Associates Arts degree from South Suburban Community College in Mass Communications and numerous certification in Early Childhood education. “It has been a long time vision and dream that became a reality through working with the Women’s Business Development Center and in life people may think money will just come to them, but in reality you must get assistance in order to start your business.”
