Four years ago, Rochelle Windham took a leave of absence from work to care for her then ill daughter and while at home, decided to make some extra money caring for other children. By 1999, her home-based business was growing faster than she expected and she had to expand into a center. The new center opened in 1999 with 25 children, and within two months, she had already doubled that number.
Now in her fourth year of business, Windham owns two child care centers on the northwest side of Chicago; one site serving children ages two through six and another site serving children ages two through twelve. Ms. Windham has taken advantage of the WBDC’s Child Care Business Initiative by seeking assistance in developing her business plan, and to gain financing for her expansion site, which opened just four weeks ago.
She attributes her rapid success to keeping a friendly attitude with family and especially her staff. Parents are particularly impressed with the way she manages her staff and feel very comfortable leaving their children in her care.
